BATS AND THE LAW

Under the 1981 Act it is a criminal offence for anyone without the permission of English Nature, intentionally kill, injure, handle, or photograph a bat (except where flying outdoors), to keep a bat (although sick or injured bats may be kept until ready for release) or to disturb a bat or its roost. English Nature must be notified about any operation likely to disturb bats or their roosts, and must be allowed time to advise on how to minimise disturbance to the bats.
