REPTILE AND AMPHIBIAN GROUP

Adder, Illustration by Sarah McCartney

Such a lot of fuss over a small thing - CRAG puts the "danger" from adders into perspective and celebrates a bumper year for this important species.

We continue to encourage people to survey for frogs, toads, newts, snakes and lizards, and to educate and advise wherever we can. Adders have caused the biggest herpetological stir in Cornwall this summer. A mild winter and a warm start to the summer made it a bumper year for these snakes. We sought to reassure people that the chances of dying from an adder bite are remote, and advised on how the wary could avoid contact with these creatures. This species has been prioritised in Cornwall's Biodiversity Action Plan (see page 15) and its successful season should be a cause for celebration.
