PARC DIARY

(Practical
Action on Reserves in Cornwall)
Come along
and help us conserve the important wild areas of Cornwall
SUNDAYS 13th & 20th SEPTEMBER
RED MOOR
We shall be visiting this large and diverse
nature reserve to work on the long distance trail that will link
Red Moor to the spectacular Helman Tor and eventually with Breney
Common. This will involve constructing some boardwalks and installing
some waymarking posts to prevent people getting lost in this wilderness
area.
Meet at the grass triangle at Tredinnick Pits (Grid Ref.: SX 077
623). Lifts from Five Acres at 9.30am or Truro railway station
at 9.45am are also available.
SUNDAYS 4th & 25th OCTOBER
BRENEY COMMON
We shall be working to improve the long distance
access route across Breney Common. Eventually this will link with
the Wilderness Trail at Redmoor to form a lovely country walk
taking in both archaeological and wildlife sites.
Meet at the reserve entrance at Lowertown (Grid Ref: SX 054 610).
Lifts from Five Acres at 9.30am or Truro railway station at 9.45am
are available.
SUNDAYS 8th & 22nd NOVEMBER
NANSMELLYN MARSH
Once again it's the time of year for the popular
task of reed cutting. It'll certainly be muddy but it's always
great fun. This traditional activity is essential to maintain
the reedbed habitat which is particularly valuable for breeding
birds.
Meet at the reserve entrance in Perranporth (Grid Ref.: SW 762
543). Lifts from Five Acres at 9:45am or Truro railway station
at 10:00am are available.
SUNDAYS 6th & 13th DECEMBER
PENDARVES WOOD
This rich and varied nature reserve has an
interesting mixture of species and habitats. The woodland was
originally planted as part of a nearby estate, but now your help
is needed to remove the invasive cherry laurel and rhododendron.
Meet at the reserve entrance gate 2 miles south of Camborne on
the B3303 (Grid Ref.: SW 641 377). Lifts from Five Acres at 9:45am
or Truro railway station at 10:00am are available.
SUNDAYS 10th & 24th JANUARY
LOGGAN'S MOOR
Loggan's Moor is an important site as it supports
a wide range of wildlife habitats, including species-rich wet
grassland and marsh, sand -dune communities and a reedbed. We
shall be cutting part of the reedbed to increase its wildlife
interest, and clearing some of the ditches to maintain areas of
open water.
Meet at the reserve entrance, just off the B3301, east of Hayle
(Grid Ref.: SW 575 390). Lifts from Five Acres at 9:45am or Truro
railways station at 10:00am are available.
SUNDAYS 7th & 21st FEBRUARY
DEVICHOYS WOOD
We will be returning to this woodland reserve
to continue with the clearance of rhododendron and other invasive
species. This will help the native woodland flora to develop.
There may also be the chance to see our charcoal kiln in operation.
Meet at the reserve entrance in Perranarworthal (Grid Ref.: SW
762 543). Lifts from Five Acres at 9.45am or Truro railway station
at 10.00am are also available.
CABILLA AND REDRICE WOODS PROJECTS
As summer recedes into autumn, so the woodland
management season gets into full swing at this superb reserve.
We will be continuing the restoration project supported by the
Heritage Lottery Fund, undertaking a variety of interesting tasks.
Refer to the list below for details or contact the Ranger, Steve
Chudleigh on 0467 792427 (mobile) or 01208 873475.
Sunday 11th October Clearing
rides to improve the habitat for butterflies
Sunday 15th November Coppicing, and creating some dead
hedging around the coppiced areas
Sunday 20th December Festive task - fell your own Christmas
tree
Sunday 17th January Coppicing another part of the woodland,
and further dead hedging
Sunday 28th February More ride clearance, with the chance
to warm yourself with a bonfire
Meet at the reserve entrance at 10.30am. We
are sorry but we can not provide lifts from Five Acres or the
Truro railway station for the Cabilla and Redrice Woods tasks.
The reserve is located 3 miles east of Bodmin, on the A38. From
the A38, travelling east, take the turning left towards Cardinham
(next to White Lodge). Cross the bridge over the Fowey, access
is via a track on the right past the sawmill (SX 129 652).
