The Sunbeam might have been designed by the waves themselves. Designed by Alfred Westmacott in 1922, she is regarded by many as his masterpiece. A classically curved keel boat with lines that are immediately captivating. The first ever Sunbeam V1 Dainty is still racing today. Since her launch, only 46 Sunbeams have ever been built, the last two, Milly V45 and Spray V46, were built at Mylor Yacht Harbour in 1999 and 2000. Milly was the first Sunbeam to be built for 16 years and the first ever in the Port of Falmouth. Following her debut at the Southampton boat show V46 was ordered and built the following year. | ![]() |

Their construction is led by highly respected master shipwrights Brian Crockford and Bert Webber with thier team of craftsmen. Mylor is one of the few yards with the skills to build Sunbeams, and their construction has been an excellent opportunity to pass his first class skills on to a future generation of Cornish shipwrights. The Sunbeam is a Bermudan rigged, open cockpit, half decked day racing yacht, carrying a generous 300 square feet of sail on her fractional rig which ensures fast and exciting sailing. |
| The Solent Sunbeams started as a Class in October 1922 and are now based at Itchenor. The Falmouth Sunbeams were formed in 1924 at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club and were originally based at Falmouth and St. Mawes, and later Mylor. The hull and white sail specifications are identical, however Solent Sunbeams use spinnakers whereas the Falmouth Sunbeams use the original ingenious device for booming out the jib, known as Kitty Gear. | ![]() |

Both divisions have strong fleets that provide very competitive racing at least four days a week during the season and compete at Cowes Week each year. Mylor Yacht Harbour is the only place that Sunbeams are now built. Please call us for more information or if you have any questions.
