South West Lakes Trust - Conservation and leisure working together
South West Lakes Trust is the region's largest combined environmental and recreational charity. Its 50 inland water sites, spread across Devon, Cornwall and West Somerset, attract in the region of 2m visits annually. It is listed as being in the top 3,000 of the country's 150,000 charities.
Lakes & Facilities
South West Lakes Trust manages 50 inland waters. Facilities and opportunities for activities vary from site to site. At some you will find campsites, activity centres and waymarked walks. Some are ideal for coarse or trout angling, watersports, picnicking and relaxing.
Below is a list of sites which are open for public access and recreation. Other sites may have restricted access, being dedicated for conservation or supporting single activities such as angling.

Argal, near Penryn, Cornwall
Nestling in a valley close to Penryn, Argal offers a great opportunity for a peaceful day in the countryside. Surrounded by sloping fields it is overlooked by the picturesque Mabe Church.
Avon Dam, near South Brent, Devon
A rewarding river walk from Shipley Bridge car park brings you to this lake which sits in open moorland. The surfaced walk along the riverside is approximately 2.5 miles ranging from gentle slopes to open moorland.
Burrator Reservoir, near Yelverton, Devon
Undisturbed Burrator is surrounded by mixed woodland which sharply contrasts with the open moor and rugged Dartmoor tors. The reservoir is popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders due to its wealth of footpaths and bridleways.
Colliford Lake, Bodmin Moor, Cornwall
With ample parking, picnic areas and lakeside walks, Colliford provides the opportunity for a peaceful day in the countryside. Three way-marked walks take in neighbouring moorland and the Nature Reserve is an important site for birdlife.
Crowdy Reservoir, near Camelford, Cornwall
Situated within the Bodmin Moor Site of Special Scientific Interest, birdwatchers will not be disappointed at this moorland lake.
Fernworthy, near Chagford, Devon
Close to the pretty Dartmoor town of Chagford and home to a wide variety of birds and wildlife, Fernworthy is a great place to visit whether it is to walk, bird watch, fish or picnic.

Surrounded by farmland and forest, these beautiful waters on the edge of Dartmoor are a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Lopwell Dam, near Plymouth, Devon
The breathtaking Lopwell Dam on the upper tidal mark of the River Tavy is an excellent site for bird watching and walking. Located just 3 miles north of Plymouth and 7 miles from Tavistock, this wildlife haven is well worth a visit.
Mary Tavy, near Tavistock, Devon
The Mary Tavy sites lie entirely within Dartmoor National Park. They form part of the open moorland of Kingsett Down and Black Down Common with some river valleys and mixed deciduous woodland of particular ecological value.
Meldon Reservoir, near Okehampton, Devon
Meldon sits well in the distinctive and dramatic Dartmoor countryside and provides an ideal starting point for moorland walks. Near Okehampton it lies at nearly 900 ft above sea level.
Porth Reservoir, near Newquay, Cornwall
Porth is a mature coarse fishery and designated bird sanctuary. The lake is a peaceful and picturesque site just outside of Newquay and is certainly worth a visit to enjoy the Cornish countryside.

With over 730 acres of water, Roadford Lake is a spectacular lake set on the edge of Dartmoor between Okehampton and Launceston, very easily accessed from Stowford Cross on the A30, and with ample parking.

Surrounded by the striking Bodmin Moor and offers a wide range of activities beside or on the water, rowing boat hire is a popular family activity. The Outdoor + Active Centre offers sailing, windsurfing and canoeing and provides top quality rainbow trout fishing.

Tamar Lakes Country Lake, Near Bude, Cornwall

Venford Reservoir, near Ashburton, Devon
Venford is a pretty lake lying on the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park and serves as a good starting point for walks on to the open moorland.

The newly renovated facilities at this majestic Lake in Exmoor National Park offer first class facilities both on and off the water.
Wistlandpound Reservoir, near South Molton, Devon
This tranquil Lake is surrounded by conifer plantations and has an established nature reserve. Located near Blackmoor Gate, North Devon, it is an ideal location for peaceful walking and angling.
