This is a single storey stone building with a natural slate roof which in the past was used for bunching and packing daffodils for market. It is across the yard from The Barn, and next to (though quite separate from) the Farmhouse. It is similar in layout to The Barn, though considerably smaller. It is very popular especially with couples and small families, being cleverly laid out to make the best use of the available space and very well equipped. It has one double bedroom, one room with bunkbeds plus a 'bivouac' area in the roof to sleep one extra.
It has the advantage of full gas central heating, making it very easy to be comfortable at any time of year, but there is no woodstove. The main living space in Bens is an open plan kitchen/living area (about 7m x 4m). The shaker style kitchen is handbuilt in wood with solid beech worktops. A modern‘range’ type electric cooker with ceramic hobs is inset, and there is a full range of the latest equipment including dishwasher and microwave and our usual full range of quality bits and pieces - we hope there is everything you might need.
The centrepiece is a large kitchen/dining/living area, over 40' long. At one end we have constructed a sleeping gallery with two beds up in the roof beams - this is very popular with older children. At the other end is the Kitchen area - fully equipped with all you need for at least eight. There is a big antique dining table and plenty of comfortable seating around the woodburner. There are two double doors leading onto the farm courtyard on one side, and a large French window opening onto a south facing patio on the other side of the house and its own garden of lawn and shrubs. Full oil central heating, plus the woodstove keeps the cottage comfortable at any time of year. Sleeping accommodation for up to eight is arranged in three bedrooms plus the 'sleeping gallery'. There is a good sized bathroom with power shower.
In all our cottages the levels of equipment and furnishing are high with dishwashers, microwaves, washing machines, hi-fi's, DVD/Video players and so on in all cottages, plus a mixture of antique and painted furniture to give a homely feel.
For many years the home of a well known St Ives artist, it has been completely restored recently. Since we bought it we have fitted out the interior - aiming to make a balance between comfort and tradition - including some modern facilities but retaining the original style and fittings where possible. It makes an irresistibly romantic place to stay, set on its own near the farmstead. It is now available to rent in the summer months either self contained or as an annex to any of the cottages which we have. It has a double bed plus space for one child and a stove, a camping loo, cooker and fridge as well as running water and a sink. Rents are from £150 a week. ![]() ![]() The farm, which has been in our family for many years, runs down to the upper reaches of the Helford River with half a mile of tidal foreshore and its own private quay. Both cottages and farm are covenanted to the National Trust to preserve them from development, and the area is designated as of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The farm is rich in wildlife, with numerous species to be found in the fields and woods, including badgers, foxes, buzzards and waterfowl. The farm is approximately 150 acres. The quay at the end of the farm, though completely tidal, provides a beautiful spot for boating, swimming and watersports when the tide is in (it dries out completely at low tide). It is accessed via a footpath and is about half a mile distant. Several rowing/sailing dinghies, canoes and Windsurfers are kept at the quay and may be used by tenants without charge. The Helford River is famous for its sheltered boating waters and wooded creeks, as well as for several world famous gardens situated to take advantage of its mild climate. Beaches, golf courses and spectacular Cornish coastal scenery are to be found to the East towards Falmouth and to the West and South around the Lizard peninsula providing virtually unlimited scope for walking, exploring or 'beaching'. |
