| About the Area |
 |
Fowey & Polruan
On the eastern edge of the harbour, the stone faced
cottages of Polruan climb in untidy tiers up the
steep sides of the valley. The two friendly pubs,
few shops and strong local community help to maintain
Polruan’s independence from its larger neighbour
just across the harbour. Fowey on the western shore
is a fascinating small town with a jumble of colour-washed
houses, numerous quaint shops, pubs and restaurants
centred on St Fimbarrus Church and Place House -
two of its many historic buildings. |

|
 |
 |
Lostwithiel
Lostwithiel, the ancient capital of Cornwall, stands
on the banks of the beautiful River Fowey about
seven miles from the sea. |
 |
| Around Lostwithiel, there are
many interesting places to visit. Restormel Castle,
the one time seat of Richard Earl of Cornwall is
within a pleasant walk of the town. Several riverside
footpaths lead from the town and local guide books
are available. The coves and beaches on the south
coast and the ancient port of Fowey are within fifteen
minutes drive and the historic harbours of Charlestown
and Mevagissey are about 30 minutes away. |
|
|
Lerryn
Lerryn is a beautiful unspoilt village at the tidal
limit of one of the creeks of the River Fowey. It
is said to have some of the loveliest river scenery
in Cornwall. The vista changes constantly with the
tide and the tranquility is disturbed only by the
birds and the occasional boat. The ducks are so
tame they can be fed from the hand. |
 |
| The sixteenth century bridge
crosses the river just upstream from the stepping
stones which provide an alternative crossing at
low tide. From the stepping stones, a path leads
to a beautiful walk through the National Trust's
Ethy Wood and on to St Winnow - a tiny riverside
hamlet with a lovely waterside church. |
|
 |
 |
|
 |
 |
Bodinnick
This tiny hamlet on the east bank of the River Fowey
is an ideal base for exploring the beautiful beaches,
walks and countryside of the Fowey area without
the hustle and bustle of the main town. The ancient
cottages and the Old Ferry Inn cling to the hillside
around the Ferry which has been operating since
the fourteenth century allowing easy access to the
harbourside shops, restaurants and inns of Fowey
itself. |
|
|
Mixtow
Fowey's busy deep water harbour is used by countless
small boats and ships of up to 17,000 tons. The
hamlet of Mixtow on the east bank of the harbour
is about one-and-a-half miles from the open sea.
It provides an ideal base for the boating enthusiast
to get afloat or relax and just watch the shipping
and harbourside activities. |
 |
| Visitors to Mixtow can launch
at Penmarlem Quay which is owned by the Harbour
Commission. Temporary moorings are available from
the Harbour Commision in the creek. It is then a
short boat trip by tender across the creek to the
properties that we offer. |
|

 |
|
 |
 |
Looe and Downderry
Originally two towns separated by the river, the
historic fishing port of Looe is renowned for its
sheltered beaches, quaint old buildings and labyrinth
of narrow streets. There are numerous local pubs
and restaurants in which to eat out and many interesting
shops and places to visit. |
 |
| Downderry is a small
village in a beautiful location on the south coast
of Cornwall just four miles from Looe. There is
a large beach with sand and shingle ideal for children
in summer or a quiet stroll in winter. The whole
area boasts stunning sea views to St George's Island
in the West, Rame Head in the East and on a clear
day you can see the famous Eddystone lighthouse
some 9 miles from shore. |
