Lonely Planet's Best in Travel: top 10 regions for 2012 includes Poitou-Charentes, France at no 10 with the following write-up:

With quiet country roads wending through vine-striped hills and wild stretches of coastal sands interspersed with misty islands, the Atlantic Coast is where the French get back to nature. Much more laid-back than the Med (but with almost as much sunshine) and ideally suited to family holidays, this is a place where you can slow the pace right down. And there are numerous ways in which to do this. You could spend a morning quietly greeting curious ducks as you kayak down the glowing green canals, rivers and streams of the Marais Poitevin. You could cycle over the lazy landscapes of the dreamy Ile de Re or raise a glass in the pretty town of Cognac. Or soak up the salty air of the white city, La Rochelle, after exploring its fascinating museums and breathtaking aquarium. Poitou-Charentes is far from undiscovered- French tourists have been flocking here for years- but aside from the city of La Rochelle (an increasingly popular weekend break destination thanks to the arrival of budget airlines), the area is woefully under-visited by foreigners.

The Area

This area really is different from the UK:

Hot summers (2nd sunniest area in France after the Riviera)
Sunflowers and vines in the fields
Tiny lizards darting around
Crickets in the evening
Strange sounding frogs
The brightly coloured hoopoe, a bird that looks like its escaped from the local zoo.
Gardens with bougainvillea, hibiscus, oleander and campsis.

The property has farmland to front and rear and is a few minutes walk from facilities in La Jarne (eg. boulangerie, tabac, pharmacie and supermarche) Nearest restaurants within walking distance are at Belle Aire- le Moulin a Poivre, le Bel Air and the recently opened Asia Chinese Restaurant. There is also a take away pizza place in La Jarne. The village also has a small golf course/driving range/ indoor tennis arena and an extensive horse riding centre. A large Carrefour supermarket is 10 minutes drive away.

Visitor comments

"Thank you both for such a warm welcome and an enjoyable stay. The location was wonderful, a quiet oasis of calm within easy reach of a wide variety of diverse places to visit. We loved the welcome pack, a crusty loaf, a very palatable bottle of wine and milk in the fridge, all quickly enjoyed in the lovely garden, accompanied by the soft rustle of wind through the trees. Great to have cleaning materials provided and an initial stock of tea, coffee, salt and pepper. You have provided a personal service by paying great attention to the little details and providing your guests with a hassle free stay in a peaceful and relaxed location."
Antoinette and Gerry, Brighton - August 2007

"Have enjoyed a really super week's relaxation at your flat in La Rochelle. Situated just 15 minutes from the airport and even less from the city centre yet out in the countryside. Perfect! Flat compact, immaculate, with everything to hand, nice comfortable bed and our own little area in the garden. What more can you want? We really love this area and hope to come back in the not too distant future."
John and Marion Horton, Hampshire - September 2007

Just to say thanks again for a fantastic break at La Desirade. As outdoor types we found the walking and cycling opportunities virtually limitless; combined with the outstanding local fresh food which we enjoyed on our forays, we have returned home happy and content. Your apartment was clean, well equipped and we really appreciated the privacy of our setting.
John and Elaine, Perthshire - June 2008

I would just like to say thank you for sending us the photographs you took of David. May I also thank you for the wonderful hospitality you showed us on our holiday, you made us feel so welcome. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the flat, it was lovely, so well equipped and homely. It was especially nice to have the little garden area for sitting out in and David particularly enjoyed the bird watching in the surrounding countryside. You and Tove certainly made our stay a memorable one.
Brenda and David, Derby - June 2008

This is just a note to say how much we enjoyed our stay with you. I have been back at work for 3 days now and one of my workmates said to me today"you haven't stopped smiling since you got back- it must have been some holiday!" I think that says it all. I think one of the best parts of the holiday was coming back after a day's sight seeing and just relaxing in our lovely garden, listening to the birds and rustling trees. Thank you for taking us under your wing and making our holiday the best ever. We are busy planning our next holiday with you.
Judy and Alan, Sheffield - July 2008

Thank you for a wonderful holiday. We have had an excellent time. We really appreciated the lift from the airport, it was a great stress free way to start our holiday. You have been great, so helpful and welcoming. We couldn't have asked for anything more. The flat is perfect and you provided us with everything we could have asked for, from advice, lifts and even onions! The area is beautiful and we have enjoyed taking in the bars, shops and cafes as well as enjoying walks and trips out. You have a lovely place and we plan to return soon, only with a car so we can explore further still.
V.and A, Sheffield - July 2008

We would like to thank you for a very enjoyable holiday at La Desirade. We found the walking and cycling virtually limitless with the good bikes which you supplied. We have returned home more than impressed. Your apartment was clean and well equipped. Certainly plenty to see and do in La Rochelle, it is a most beautiful city. Being picked up and put back to airport was of great assistance. Finally we would like to say Alan and Tove do their job far above and beyond the call of duty. Value for money excellent.
Jimmy and Mary, Maryburgh by Dingwall, Scotland - August 2009

Just a brief note to thank you both for your hospitality this past week. We greatly enjoyed our stay and had a good trip home. We will be happy to recommend our friends to come and stay at your accommodation. Everything first class. The home grown almonds were delicious.
Sally and Alan, Portsmouth - September 2009

It was great to have the use of 2 bikes while staying at La Desirade both for exploring the surrounding villages and for getting the buzz of cycling over the beautiful bridge to the Ile de Re. Its free for cyclists and quite expensive for motorists. We had lunch on the island and cycled back- a bit of a challenge but not too heroic and certainly possible for averagely confident cyclists.
Colin and Shirley, Bentham North Yorks - September 2009

Alan and Tove are excellent hosts, very welcoming. The flat was immaculate and well equipped. On Tove's advice we visited Saintes and had a lovely day. The fish market in Fouras was interesting and had some unusual items. We went with Alan to a firework display held for Bastille Day in La Rochelle. It was fantastic and we also had a walking tour in La Rochelle with Alan. Thanks for a memorable holiday.
Jane and Duncan Perthshire - July 2010

Thank you so much for making our stay so enjoyable and letting us share your home. It was good to have English TV and a WIFI connection available to use. The flat is in an excellent position for beaches ports, Ile de Re, etc. Also thank you for your generous hospitality and help over the little matter of a "Stop" sign! It was lovely to meet you both and we thoroughly enjoyed the home grown vegetables you gave us.
Mike and Margaret Lot et Garonne - September 2010

We just wanted to let you know what a lovely time we spent at La Desirade. We were made to feel extremely welcome by you both and it was very kind of you to answer all the questions we bombarded you with on our arrival. We would love to stay again- the apartment was perfect for what we needed and a great base for La Rochelle and surrounding areas. The apartment had everything (and more) that we needed and the bottle waiting for us on arrival was a really lovely touch as well as the vegetables you gave us from your garden.
Libby and Adam, Salisbury - September 2010

Just to say a big thank you to you both for making our stay at your lovely gite so pleasurable. Your hospitality is second to none and we appreciate all that you did to make our stay enjoyable. We will be making sure we recommend your gite to our family and friends and hope to return one day in the not too distant future.
Arlene and Mark, Gourock - May 2011

Just a line to thank you once again for making Trevor and I so welcome on our visit to your flat last week.We had a wonderful holiday and the flat was in an ideal situation for exploring the area and nothing was too much trouble for you. We really enjoyed the local rock concert and it was really good of you to show us around the area. Thank you once again.
Brenda and Trevor Black, Harrogate - June 2011

We enjoyed a great two weeks staying in Alan and Tove's flat in September. The accommodation with its own patio is ideal for a couple. The owners offer far more than the use of a holiday home. They are very welcoming without being intrusive. We have no hesitation in recommending a stay at La Desirade in this lovely part of France.
Joan and Colin, Rayleigh - September 2011

Newsletter - 2011

Our newly converted flat opened for business in March 2007 since when we have had visitors from England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Channel Islands, France, Germany, Australia and the USA. Several of our guests have come without a car and have got around pretty well walking, by bike, local bus and with some lifts from us, though to get the best out of the area a car is really needed. We are always in residence when the flat is let so are on hand for advice, information and in the unlikely event of something going wrong. Some guests we rarely see after the initial tour round the accommodation and garden. Others have become personal friends, having a glass of wine, taking trips to the local market. We always say, knock on our door as often as you like or not at all. Its up to you!

A couple of tips on driving in France. French police take very seriously any failure to observe stop signs at road junctions (usually accompanied by a solid white line) and are likely to fine you if observed. One of our holiday couples got caught last year and the fine and the mechanics of paying it were an upset to the start of their holiday. Secondly on peage autoroutes the are fewer and fewer manned kiosks where you can pay someone cash. Sometimes there are containers where you can throw in the correct amount. As far as I'm aware all the pay booths (except those marked Reserve Telepeage) have a machine just before the barrier where you can put in your ticket and in an adjacent slot insert a credit card. The barrier then opens straightaway. Apologies if you know this already.

More and more of our guests are using the bus to La Rochelle. Its quick, cheap and stress free. One couple this year reduced the cycling distance to the Ile de Re by taking the front wheels off our bikes and transporting them in their hatchback to the bridge car park.
Jill and Gerry from near Dublin came with us to the village pre Bastille Day celebrations, entered into the spirt of things buying drinks for the locals and jigging around to the band. Gerry had a good line in Dublin slang which he promised more of. I'm still waiting!
Eating places within walking distance of us have increased, there are now 5 within about 15 mins. If that's not enough there are over 300 in the city centre 10 mins drive away.

New for 2012

Not really new but just a reminder that main season prices for 2012 remain at 2010 levels. Don't forget also that paying in pounds gets round the low exchange rate problem.
